Keeping in mind all the positive aspects involved in using credit card (shared by me in the previous article), let’s go through some of the security concerns and the ways to handle them.
As we have the internet password for logging on any website or 4 digit pin for every debit card etc, we have a CVV number – 3 digit number written at the back side – for credit cards. All that we require to purchase anything using a credit card online is the card number, expiry date and CVV number. Unfortunately, we have all the three clearly written on the credit card itself. Also, while using credit cards in shops, we do not require the CVV number. The magnetic strip on the credit card takes care of the information that needs to go into the machine, which validates your credentials with the server, and confirms the payment after you put your signature on the receipt – which again should ideally be validated by the shop owner with the ones present on the credit card. So, if you don’t have a signature on your credit card and it gets lost, the new owner has every reason to use it anywhere without any concerns. However, if you had the sign, the new owner would have been restricted to use your card only online.
Personally, I feel that CVV number should not be written on the card, and should come to our mailing address just like the pin number or the internet passwords for our internet banking account so that we can memorize it. Since that’s not the case till date, we need to make sure of two things to make sure that we live a risk free life using credit cards. First will be to put our beautiful signatures on the credit card and second is to cover the CVV number on the credit card, preferably by striking it off by dark permanent marker and then putting a piece of small paper over it – don’t forget to write down the CVV somewhere else. This way, even when you loose your card, he or she will have to do some labor to get the card work for them and in the mean time do block your card as soon as possible.
Another concern that comes with credit cards is their hidden costs which we get to know during the life cycle of the card. Hidden charges generally come into play only when you don’t pay your bill before or on the due date as there are many charges like late payment fees, interest on amount due etc, which get activated only when you default. So as a better practice, keep paying your bills on time.

Nice article ….Ask any new person getting the credit card for the first time …what comes in mind the moment he comes to know how to use the credit cards …the doubt and fear comes first in mind and than the advantages….even a child can foresee the loopholes …. I do not know how this idea got even approved for the first time to be used through out the world…there are so many loopholes right from the issue to usage of cards …there is no point to point security…moreover no mechanism to tell that the owner of the card is using the card ….i used to use my brother card during college days…..”TRUST is ALL on which this product is working well…and as Ebay says Most people are Good …so less chances of fraud”….same holds true for banks ….they make good money out of it “Blindly on TRUST” …. .
Ashish, all the concerns are valid but the way you use it can help you eradicate all the loopholes. The person has to use the card himself, and if he is not, then its his problem if any claims are made against his card.
You buy a car to drive it yourself, you can also give it to the driver to drive it for you, but when the same driver takes the car away or rather steals it then, at ground root level, its you who is responsible for it.
In the financial world, I am sorry to say but no product is fraud proof. TRUST as pointed by you goes a long way.
You are right …”Prevention is better than Cure ” …buddy this is not the cure for the disease…nyway nice comment
You are right …”Prevention is better than Cure ” …but buddy this is not the actual cure for the disease…
nyway nice comment
yup, to be right on target, there is no cure for this. As you said, we can only prevent it from happening.
good one ankit ..though there is another major security concern that i want to raise ..it is the credit card copier..there are umpteen no. of cases in which the waiter at a restaurant or any shop owner takes you credit card away from your eyes to swipe it for the payment of the services offered to you (that’s what you think! ) ..though they not only swipe it for payment to be made but swipe it again in their card copier for copying the real contents, all stored in the magnetic stripe of your card..
what can we do: try avoiding your card to be going out of your sight..or at most let someone take the card only at reputable places ..if you don’t take this precaution you are completely at the whim and fancy of the card-stealer’s shopping mood !
You answered it yourself… you just cannot take the luxury of giving the card to waiter whether you are at reputed places or any koisk. If at all you are doing so, you are responsible for it.
Dude it’s your money and you need to move around to save it from unwarranted hands.
Also, you can register for more information from your bank wherein you will get a SMS as soon as a transaction is made over and above a certain amount which can be as low as 100. If you find any misusage of your card, then atleast you can stop it sooner.
i knew dat i am answering it ..i just wanted to add it to the security concerns you mentioned ..hehe
lets have something from u for a layman like me a elaborative blog entry on equities…
